What does a full bathroom renovation involve on the plumbing side?

Two main stages: rough-in, where new pipework and drainage are positioned before waterproofing and tiling, and fit-off, where the fixtures go in at the end. In between, we coordinate with the other trades, tilers, waterproofers, electricians, so the job runs in the right order and nothing has to be undone.

One Renovation, Done Properly

One renovation, done properly

A full bathroom renovation is the one time everything behind the walls is genuinely accessible, and it's the cheapest moment to fix pipework, drainage and connections that would otherwise mean tearing tiles out again later. Ready Plumbing manages the plumbing side of full bathroom renovations across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, and can coordinate the whole project end-to-end with trusted local tradespeople if that's what you need.

How It Runs

How it runs

Step 1

Rough-in

New pipework, drainage and any layout changes are positioned before waterproofing and tiling go on. This is also when we upgrade anything found to be worn, undersized or non-compliant behind the old walls.

Step 2

Waterproofing and tiling

Handled by trusted trades, coordinated so the schedule doesn't stall waiting on plumbing sign-off.

Step 3

Fit-off

Toilets, vanities, tapware and fixtures installed at the end, connected to the rough-in and tested.

Renovation Day

What renovation day is the right time to fix

  • Old galvanised pipework: Corrodes from the inside and is easiest to replace while walls are open.
  • Poor drainage falls: The reason some bathrooms have always drained slowly.
  • Worn stop taps and isolation valves: Cheap to replace now, expensive to access later.
  • Dated tapware and fixtures: Upgraded to modern, water-efficient options.

Layout Changes

Layout changes

Not every layout is fixed. Moving a toilet, shower or vanity to a different wall depends on the drainage runs and falls achievable on your slab, which we assess on site. We hear from plenty of clients who were told by someone else that a layout change “can’t be done”, and often it can, it just needs the right measurement and planning. See our vanity replacement and toilet replacement pages for how we handle fixture positioning.

FAQ

Full Bathroom Renovations: your questions answered

Plumbing problems can be extremely frustrating. Our licensed Sydney plumbers are here to provide fast, reliable answers and solutions.

Do you manage the whole renovation or just the plumbing?

We can do either. Some clients want us to manage the renovation end-to-end, coordinating trusted local tradespeople we've worked with for years. Others already have their own tiler or builder and just need the plumbing scope handled properly alongside them.

What should be upgraded during a full renovation?

Renovation is the cheapest time to fix everything behind the walls: old galvanised pipes, worn stop taps, poor drainage falls, and dated tapware. Opening the walls twice is what actually costs money, so it's worth doing properly the first time.

Can the layout be changed, or does everything have to stay where it is?

Often it can, moving a toilet or shower to a different wall depends on where the drainage runs and the falls that can be achieved, which we assess on site. Keeping fixtures in roughly their current positions is the cheaper option, but a full renovation is exactly the point where a layout change makes sense if you want one.

How long does the plumbing take on a full renovation?

The plumbing itself happens in two visits, rough-in and fit-off, each typically a day or two. The total renovation timeline depends on the other trades in between: waterproofing curing time, tiling, and any structural work.

Do you supply the fixtures or do we choose them?

Either. We can recommend and supply quality fixtures suited to your budget, or we're happy to install fixtures you've already chosen, provided they suit the plumbing set-out.
