New Toilet in Mosman: Matched to the Existing Plumbing, Not Just the Looks
A poor-flushing toilet, a site visit, and how we matched the right suite to the existing set-out without disturbing a single tile.

The situation
A homeowner in Mosman got in touch about her toilets: not everything was clearing the bowl properly on flush, no matter how she used them. She wanted two things, better flush performance and honest advice on what would actually fit the plumbing she already had, rather than just picking whatever looked good online.
We came to site to inspect both toilets and talk through what she wanted before recommending anything.
What we found
Poor flush performance rarely comes down to one thing. Three factors usually combine:
- The flushing mechanism itself. Cheaper or no-name suites often use a weaker or poorly directed flush action that doesn’t clear the bowl in one go.
- The bowl’s glaze. Lower-quality coatings let waste and residue stick to the ceramic instead of sheeting off cleanly.
- The bowl and trapway shape. How the bowl is moulded and how the water sits inside it affects how thoroughly a flush actually clears the pan.
Older or budget suites tend to be weaker on all three at once, which is exactly the pattern she was describing.
The fix
We recommended a Caroma Cleanflush suite: a rimless bowl design that removes the rim where residue traditionally collects, paired with a flushing action engineered to clear the bowl properly rather than just top it up with water.
Recommending the right suite is only half the job, though. Before anything gets ordered, we measure the existing set-out: the position of the waste outlet in the floor and the water inlet point on the wall. A toilet can’t just be dropped into position; the new suite’s connections have to line up with the plumbing that’s already there, or it simply won’t fit. Get it wrong and you’re not just re-measuring: once a suite’s been opened, most suppliers won’t take it back, so it has to be done right the first time.
Her existing toilets were cemented directly to the floor tiles, which means removal has to be handled carefully. We also chose suites with a footprint that sits over the existing cement marks on the tiles, so there’s no need to lift or replace any tiles to get a clean, finished result.
Flush performance comes down to the mechanism, the glaze, and how the bowl’s shaped, not the price tag on the box. Get those three right and a toilet clears properly every time.
The outcome
About 30 minutes after we arrived, she had a decision she was confident in: two Caroma Cleanflush suites, matched to the measured set-out in both bathrooms.
When the right suite is already in stock, we can measure, remove and install in the one visit. This time, the Cleanflush suites she wanted for the flush performance she was after weren’t on the shelf, so they’ve been ordered in and installation is booked for five days out, once stock arrives. That’s the trade-off of getting the right toilet rather than the closest one on hand, and for the improvement she’s after, it’s worth the short wait.
Matching a new toilet to an existing set-out and removal point is something we do every week across the North Shore and Northern Beaches, whether that’s a same-day swap from stock or, like this one, ordering in the right suite and coming back to fit it properly.
Weak flush, or just replacing an old toilet? Our toilet replacement team measures the set-out on every job before recommending a suite, and covers Mosman and the rest of the North Shore. For the bigger picture, see our bathroom renovations service.
