How do I know if my gutters need repairing or replacing?

What are the signs of failing gutters?
Leaks and drips at joints, visible rust, sagging sections, gaps between the gutter and fascia, water overflowing during rain, rotting fascia boards, and pooling water around your foundations after storms.
Why do my gutters overflow when it rains?
Usually one of four things: leaf debris blocking the gutter or downpipe, insufficient fall towards the downpipes, undersized gutters or downpipes for the roof area, or sagging sections where water ponds. Overflow that hits your eaves and walls causes real damage, so it's worth diagnosing properly.
Do blocked gutters really cause roof leaks?
Yes, blocked downpipes and leaf debris in gutters are a common cause of what looks like a roof leak. Water backs up over the gutter's back edge and into the eaves. Clearing and repairing the guttering often fixes 'roof leaks' without touching the roof.
