Why do downpipes need replacing?
Downpipes fail three ways: they rust out (especially near the base and joints), they block with leaves and debris, or they were never sized for the roof area they drain. Any of the three causes gutters to back up and overflow in rain, so if your gutters overflow but look sound, the downpipes are the first suspects.

Everyone looks at the gutters; almost nobody looks at the downpipes. But the downpipe is the only exit the water has, and when it’s rusted through, blocked with leaf debris, or too small for the roof it serves, the whole gutter system backs up. The result is overflowing gutters, soaked eaves, and what looks convincingly like a roof leak.

Signs your downpipes need attention
- Gutters overflow while the outlet trickles: A blockage in the pipe: the gutter above overflows in rain while little water comes out the bottom.
- Rust at the base, joints or brackets: Downpipes corrode from the inside out, so visible rust means it’s well progressed.
- Water staining or moss down the outside: A sign of leaking joints or splits in the pipe.
- One section of gutter always overflows first: The nearest downpipe is blocked or undersized.
- Downpipes that end at ground level: Discharging onto paths or gardens instead of into stormwater, eroding soil and wetting foundations.

How do I know if a downpipe is blocked?
Watch it in rain: if the gutter above overflows while little water comes out the bottom, the pipe is blocked. Other tells are gurgling sounds, water staining down the pipe's outside, and overflow concentrated near one downpipe while the rest of the run behaves.
Can blocked downpipes cause roof leaks?
Yes, it's one of the most common causes we find. When a downpipe blocks, water backs up along the gutter and over its back edge into the eaves and roof cavity. It presents exactly like a roof leak, but the fix is the downpipe, not the roof.
Where should downpipes drain to?
Into the property's stormwater system, not onto a path or garden bed. Discharging at ground level erodes soil, undermines paving and can direct water at your own or your neighbour's foundations. We connect replacements to stormwater properly as part of the job.
How many downpipes should my roof have?
It depends on roof catchment area and gutter size. As a rough rule, one downpipe per 12 metres of gutter run, more for large or steep roofs. Too few downpipes is a design fault we find often on older homes, and it makes even healthy gutters overflow in heavy rain.
