Why do gas appliances need servicing?

Because a gas appliance that burns incorrectly can produce carbon monoxide (an odourless, potentially lethal gas), and because worn components leak, waste gas and fail. Servicing keeps combustion clean, catches faulty parts early, and keeps heaters and hot water systems running efficiently. Licensed gas fitters like Ready Plumbing handle it end to end.

Installed & Serviced

Installed correctly, serviced regularly, safe always

Gas appliances are the definition of "set and forget", until a pilot light won't stay lit, a burner flame turns yellow, or a heater starts smelling odd. Ready Plumbing installs and services the full range of household gas appliances across the Northern Beaches and North Shore:

  • Gas cooktops: installation, connection and servicing
  • Gas hot water systems: storage and instantaneous, including repairs and full replacements
  • Space heaters / room heaters: serviced so they burn clean through winter
  • Gas pool heaters: installation and servicing
  • Gas meters and supply: home meter installations and the valves and lines that feed everything

All work is performed by licensed gas fitters, using materials suited to gas service and matched to your fuel: natural gas and LPG require different flows and pressures, and every appliance must be set up for the right one.

Why It Matters

Why servicing is a safety issue, not just maintenance

An incorrectly installed or poorly maintained gas appliance can produce carbon monoxide, a dangerous, potentially lethal gas you can’t see or smell. Clean combustion is the whole game: a serviced appliance burns blue and vents properly; a neglected one burns dirty. Making sure your gas system is installed correctly and kept that way provides a safe and healthy environment for your family and home.

Servicing also pays for itself in smaller ways: burners that heat efficiently, pilots that stay lit, and components replaced at service prices instead of emergency call-out prices.

Common Call-Out

The pilot light problem

The most common gas appliance call-out we get: a heater or hot water system whose pilot light has blown out or won’t stay lit. Wind is a frequent culprit, particularly where covers are missing or were incorrectly installed, and failing components like thermocouples do the rest. We relight, diagnose why it went out, and fix the actual cause, whether that’s refitting covers, replacing the thermocouple or renewing faulty gas components.

Something Smells Off?

When it's a leak, not a service

If an appliance smells of gas, hisses, or your bills have crept up without explanation, that’s a leak investigation rather than a service, and we run those 24/7.

FAQ

Gas Appliance Servicing: your questions answered

Plumbing problems can be extremely frustrating. Our licensed Sydney plumbers are here to provide fast, reliable answers and solutions.

How often should gas appliances be serviced?

The general guidance is every couple of years for most appliances, and per the manufacturer's schedule for heaters, with any appliance showing symptoms (yellow flame, soot, smells, pilot problems) checked immediately rather than waiting for its next service.

What does a yellow or sooty flame mean?

Gas should burn blue. A lazy yellow flame or soot marks mean incomplete combustion, the conditions that produce carbon monoxide. Stop using the appliance and have it serviced.

Which appliances do you install and service?

Gas cooktops, gas hot water systems (storage and instantaneous), home gas meters, space heaters (room heaters), gas pool heaters, plus the gas valves and connections that serve them.

My gas heater's pilot light keeps going out: is that a servicing issue?

Usually yes. Pilots are commonly blown out by wind (especially with missing or incorrectly installed covers) or failing due to a worn thermocouple or faulty gas components, all standard servicing repairs we handle, including on hot water systems.

Can you convert appliances between natural gas and LPG?

Where the manufacturer supports conversion, yes: the two fuels run at different flows and pressures, so conversion involves changing jets and regulators and re-commissioning. Never run an appliance on the wrong fuel.
