Why does my gas hot water pilot light keep going out?
Wind commonly blows out pilot lights, especially if the unit's covers are missing or incorrectly fitted. If it keeps happening or won't relight, the thermocouple (the safety sensor that holds the gas valve open) has often failed and needs replacing. It's a quick, inexpensive repair.
Why does my instantaneous hot water keep cutting in and out?
Continuous flow units need enough water flow to trip their internal flow switch before they ignite. Low flow, often caused by partially blocked inlet filters, makes them stop and start. Cleaning the filters or replacing a minor part usually fixes it.
Why is my hot water coming out rusty or brown?
Rust or sediment from the hot taps usually means the inside of a steel storage tank has started corroding, typically because the sacrificial anode was never replaced. At that stage the tank is on borrowed time; we'll confirm on-site whether it's worth repairing or replacing.
Is it worth repairing an old hot water system?
As a rule of thumb: component faults (valves, thermostats, elements, thermocouples) on a system under 8 years old are worth repairing. A steel tank leaking from the tank body, or pushing rusty water, is at end-of-life, so money spent repairing it is usually wasted.
