What Is a Pressure Limiting Valve?

Street mains pressure varies enormously, and “strong shower” pressure at the top of the street can be pipe-stressing pressure at the bottom of the hill. The PLV is the small brass regulator that brings whatever the main delivers down to what your plumbing is designed for.

Why It Matters

• High pressure quietly destroys things: it stresses every pipe and joint, hammers ceramic tap cartridges, splits flexible hoses (a leading cause of indoor floods), and shortens hot water system life.
• Hot water systems commonly require one: manufacturers specify maximum inlet pressures, and a compliant installation includes the PLV where pressure demands it.
• It works with, not instead of, other valves: alongside tempering valves and duo valves in a properly assembled hot water installation.
• When a PLV fails, symptoms run both ways: suddenly harsher pressure (valve stuck open) or weak flow everywhere (valve failing closed).

Signs Your Pressure Is Too High

• Banging pipes (water hammer) when taps or appliances shut off
• Taps that drip again soon after repair
• Frequent relief-valve dripping on the hot water system
• Burst flexible hoses, or a history of “unlucky” small leaks

Common Mistakes or Misunderstandings

• “More pressure is better.” Up to a point, but beyond it, you’re paying in repairs. Regulated pressure still gives excellent showers.
• “My pressure dropped, the PLV must be broken.” Sometimes, but blocked filters, a failing tempering valve or a mains issue can look identical. Diagnose before replacing.
• “It never needs looking at.” PLVs age like any valve; they’re typically replaced when a new hot water system goes in rather than reused.

When to Call a Plumber

Banging pipes, repeat leak repairs, or a hot water installation without one where pressure runs high: a pressure test takes minutes and tells you exactly where you stand.
