What Is a Tempering Valve?

The tank stores water hot enough to control bacteria; the tempering valve makes sure what reaches your shower can’t scald anyone. Two different temperatures, one small brass valve in between.

Why It Matters

• It’s a safety device: delivered hot water above 50°C scalds skin (children’s especially) in seconds.
• It’s required for compliance: a hot water installation without a correctly set tempering valve doesn’t meet the standard.
• When it drifts or seizes, the symptoms mimic a dying hot water system: lukewarm water everywhere, or temperature that swings hot and cold.
• Tempering valves have a service life, and they’re commonly replaced when a new system is installed rather than reused.

How It Fails

Internal parts wear and scale up over the years. A failing valve either sticks toward cold (endless lukewarm showers while your tank is piping hot) or lets temperature wander. Many “broken hot water system” call-outs end with us replacing a $100-ish valve, not a $2,000 heater.

Common Mistakes or Misunderstandings

• “My hot water is weak, the system must be dying.” Sometimes the system is fine and the valve (tempering, duo or pressure limiting) is the real fault. Diagnose before replacing.
• “I’ll just turn the tank thermostat up.” The tank must store water at 60°C+ (bacteria control) and the valve tempers it down; cranking the thermostat doesn’t fix a failed valve.
• “Any plumber’s offsider can skip it on a cheap install.” An install without one isn’t compliant, and it’s your family in the shower.

When to Call a Plumber

Lukewarm water from every hot tap while the system seems to be heating, or noticeable temperature swings mid-shower: both point at the valve. It’s a quick, inexpensive replacement.
