The situation

A household in Dee Why called our emergency line with no hot water. Their gas storage hot water system’s pilot light had gone out, and every attempt to relight it failed. The pilot would light, then die the moment it was released.

No pilot light means the burner can’t fire, and no burner means the tank goes cold. For a busy household, that’s showers, dishes and washing all offline at once.

What we found

This is one of the most common gas hot water faults we see across the Northern Beaches, and the symptom pattern (pilot lights, then won’t stay lit) pointed straight at the thermocouple.

The thermocouple is a small safety sensor that sits in the pilot flame. While it senses heat, it holds the gas valve open; if the pilot goes out, it shuts the gas off so the system can’t leak unburnt gas. When a thermocouple fails, it can no longer hold the valve open even with a healthy flame, so the pilot dies every time you release the button. The system behaves as if it’s broken, but the fault is one inexpensive component.

The fix

We carry common gas hot water parts in the van, so this was a single-visit repair:

  • Isolated the gas supply and removed the failed thermocouple.
  • Fitted and sealed the new thermocouple in the pilot assembly.
  • Relit the pilot, confirmed it held, and test-fired the main burner.
  • Checked the system over (connections, flue and operation) before leaving.

Hot water was back on within the hour of arriving.

The outcome

The household kept their existing system: no replacement needed, no waiting for a new unit, no cold showers that night. A failed thermocouple is a repair, not a death sentence for a hot water system, and it’s exactly the kind of fault that’s worth a phone call before assuming the worst.

Wind commonly blows out pilot lights too, especially where the unit’s covers are missing or incorrectly fitted. If your pilot goes out once, relight it. If it keeps going out or won’t stay lit, that’s when to call.
