What Is Backflow Prevention?

Water is supposed to flow one way: from the main, into your home. But when mains pressure suddenly drops, say from a burst water main or firefighting draw-off, water can siphon backwards. Backflow prevention makes sure that if it does, nothing contaminated goes with it.

Household taps and appliances include basic protection: air gaps on cisterns and tanks, check valves on mixers, vacuum breakers on some outdoor fittings. Higher-hazard connections step up to dedicated, testable assemblies.

Common Mistakes or Misunderstandings

• “Water can’t flow backwards.” It can and does: any significant pressure drop in the main turns your property’s plumbing into a siphon.
• “It’s only a commercial thing.” Home irrigation systems and pool connections commonly require backflow protection too.
• “Install once, forget forever.” Testable devices require annual accredited testing; a failed, untested device is no protection at all.
