What Is a Ceramic Disc Tap?

A ceramic disc tap is a quarter- or half-turn tap with an inbuilt valve made of two polished ceramic discs. Rotating the handle aligns openings in the discs to let water flow. They contain no washers: when one leaks, the ceramic cartridge is replaced rather than a washer.

That smooth quarter-turn from off to full flow, with no winding and no squeaking, is two ceramic discs sliding across each other. It’s the mechanism inside most modern taps, and it’s also why “just change the washer” doesn’t apply to them.

Why It Matters

  • Easy to use: a quarter or half turn opens full flow, which is also why we recommend them for elderly users and arthritic hands that struggle with traditional winding taps.
  • Durable: polished ceramic doesn’t degrade the way rubber washers do, so they typically go years longer between repairs.
  • Repaired differently: a leaking ceramic disc tap needs its cartridge replaced (matched to the tap), not a washer.

How They Fail

Grit or debris scoring the discs, worn O-rings, and excessive water pressure hammering the cartridge. Symptoms: a drip that quarter-turning harder won’t stop, a handle that grinds, or a tap that suddenly turns too freely.

Common Mistakes or Misunderstandings

  • “It’s dripping, I’ll put a washer in it.” There’s no washer in there; forcing the wrong parts in damages the body. It takes the correct cartridge.
  • “Turning it harder will stop the drip.” With ceramic discs, force does nothing but wear the mechanism: the discs either seal or they don’t.
  • “All cartridges are the same.” They vary by brand and model; the right part matters, which is where a plumber’s supplier network earns its keep.

When to Call a Plumber
