What Is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining is a no-dig method of repairing damaged underground pipes: a resin-saturated liner is inserted through the existing pipe and cured in place, forming a smooth structural new pipe inside the old one. It permanently seals cracks, breaks and tree-root entry points without excavation.

Instead of digging down to a broken pipe, relining builds a new pipe inside it, through the existing access points, with your driveway, garden and landscaping untouched.

Why It Matters

  • Tree roots are Sydney’s #1 drain destroyer, entering through joints and cracks in older earthenware pipes. The seamless cured liner has no joints, so there’s nothing for roots to re-enter.
  • Excavation’s real cost isn’t the digging, it’s what gets destroyed above the pipe: driveways, retaining walls, pools, bathroom slabs. Relining repairs underneath all of it.
  • It’s structural, not a coating: the cured liner is a pipe in its own right, engineered for a ~50-year design life.
  • It turns recurring annual blockage call-outs into a one-time permanent fix.

How It Works (Four Steps)

  1. CCTV inspection: see the damage and confirm the pipe is relinable.
  2. High-pressure cleaning: roots cut out, pipe scoured back to a bondable surface.
  3. Liner installation: resin-saturated liner drawn in and inflated against the pipe wall, through bends and junctions as needed.
  4. Cure and verify: resin hardens; a final camera pass proves the result.

Common Mistakes or Misunderstandings

  • “Relining is a temporary patch.” Quality relining is a permanent structural repair, often outlasting the surrounding original pipe.
  • “Any broken pipe can be relined.” Fully collapsed or badly back-falling sections can’t: those need excavation and replacement. The camera decides, not the sales pitch.
  • “It’s the expensive option.” Metre-for-metre it’s comparable to excavation; once you price reinstating what digging destroys, relining usually wins comfortably.

When to Call a Plumber

Recurring blockages, especially roots that come back after every clearing, are the signature relining scenario. Get a camera inspection and see the actual pipe before deciding anything.
