Flooded Laundry in Balgowlah: A 10-Year-Old Washing Machine Hose Let Go
A homeowner caught a laundry flood on her way out the door. The hose that failed showed no warning signs, so we checked every hidden hose in the house while we were there.

The situation
A homeowner in Balgowlah called our emergency line at 7am, already apologising for the early hour. As a 24/7 emergency plumbing service, it wasn’t a problem at all, and with water actively flooding a home, every minute matters.
She was on her way out the door to work when she noticed water pooling out of the laundry across the floorboards and into the cabinets. Straight away we talked her through the first move while we got on the road: turn off the taps under the sink at the source of the flood, or shut off the water to the whole house if that’s easier to get to fast. Given the call, we headed out immediately to get things under control.
What we found
The cause was a washing machine hose, probably around ten years old, that had split right at the join where the hose meets its screwed connection. By the time she’d spotted the water and isolated it, the flooding had already spread through the laundry cabinets and under the floorboards.
She was fortunate to catch it when she did. Even in the short window between the hose splitting and her spotting it on her way out the door, it was enough water to already be soaking into the cabinetry and the boards beneath them. A hose that lets go while nobody’s watching doesn’t stop until someone finds it or the tank runs dry.
What made this one worth being upfront about: the hose that failed didn’t show rust or any obvious sign of wear beforehand. It had simply reached the end of its life at the join. That’s the real lesson from this job, not every failing hose warns you first, which is exactly why age alone is a reason to replace one rather than waiting for it to look bad.
With the immediate flood dealt with, we offered to check the rest of the house while we were there, the other flexible hoses and the water pressure, to make sure nothing else was sitting on borrowed time.
Not every hose shows its age before it fails. This one gave no warning at all, it just let go at the join. That’s exactly why it’s worth replacing them on age, not on appearance.
Going through the home, we found three more ageing connections that hadn’t failed yet but were clearly heading that way: a rusty flexible hose under the vanity on the mixer, a rusted flexible connection hidden inside the wall system behind a fixture (the kind nobody sees unless someone thinks to look), and a rusted connection in the works of a toilet. None of these would have been visible without deliberately checking.

The fix
We replaced the split washing machine hose to get the laundry back in service, then replaced all three of the rusted connections found during the inspection: the vanity mixer hose, the hidden in-wall flexible connection, and the toilet connection. We also checked the home’s water pressure to confirm it was within the regulated range, since pressure that runs too high shortens the life of every hose and fitting in the house.
Every hose that went in was polymer, a flexible plastic rather than the braided metal that had rusted through on the vanity, wall and toilet connections. Polymer hoses can’t rust, which takes the exact failure mode we found in three spots around this home off the table for good.

The outcome
Four ageing connections were replaced in the one visit, all before any of the remaining three could fail the way the washing machine hose did. The homeowner was extremely happy with the outcome, and genuinely surprised that these hidden risks existed in her home at all. She said she wished someone had pointed them out sooner.
That’s the trade-off worth putting plainly: the cost of replacing a handful of hoses on a routine visit is nothing next to the cost of a flood through cabinetry, floorboards and walls, and nothing at all next to a flood nobody’s home to catch. If your washing machine hose, or any flexible connection in the house, is getting up in years, replacing it before it fails is far cheaper than the alternative.
