Broken Sewer Pipe in Seaforth: Blockage Backs Up and Floods the Bathroom
When a sewer line blocks solid with nowhere to go, it doesn't just sit in the pipe, it comes back up through the nearest fixture in the house. Here's how a hidden crack in Seaforth ended with sewage flooding a lower bathroom, and how we fixed both the mess and the cause.
- Friday call-out
- Emergency attended the same afternoon
- Bathroom flooded
- Sewage backed up through the lower bathroom
- 3 hours
- To clear the blockage and get the pipe flowing again
- Rerouted
- New pipework laid around the break, not dug out at the crack
The situation
We got an emergency call on a Friday afternoon to a home in Seaforth. The sewer line had blocked solid, and with nowhere else to go, the sewage had backed up and flooded the lower bathroom, a serious mess in the house that needed sorting straight away. Friday afternoon call-outs like this are ones we treat as a priority; nobody should be left with a flooded bathroom over the weekend.
What we found
We ran a CCTV camera up the line to see what was going on, and found the sewer pipe had cracked from ground movement, the soil around the pipe shifting enough over time to break it. That crack on its own wouldn’t necessarily block a pipe. The problem was what it caught.
Baby wipes had been going down the toilet and travelling down the line, and every time they passed over the crack, some of them snagged on the rough broken edge instead of continuing through. Even wipes labelled “flushable” don’t break down in water the way toilet paper does, so once a few caught, more built up behind them. That happened gradually over months until the pipe was finally blocked solid. Once a sewer line is blocked end to end, the waste has to go somewhere, and it takes the path of least resistance back up through whichever fixture sits lowest in the house, which is exactly why it came up through the lower bathroom rather than anywhere else.

Once we knew there was a break, we used locating equipment to pinpoint exactly where it sat underground before doing any digging.
The fix
Clearing the immediate blockage took three hours of work to get the pipe flowing freely again and take the pressure off the bathroom. We also gave the bathroom a basic clean-up on the spot so the client wasn’t left dealing with the mess on top of everything else.
With the line clear, the real fix was dealing with the crack itself so the same thing didn’t happen again. Rather than digging up and repairing that exact section of pipe, we laid a new run of pipework to reroute the line around the break entirely. For where this crack sat, that was the most cost-effective option for the client: a straightforward reroute instead of excavation work targeting the damaged section directly.

The outcome
The sewer now runs through the new pipework, bypassing the cracked section completely, and the blockage that had been building for months, and the flooding it caused, is gone. The client ended up with a fix that solved the actual cause, not just the symptom, without paying for more excavation than the job needed.
